2 Samuel 6:3-5
They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.
This scene seems like a wonderful God-honoring one, doesn’t it? But actually, it was the prelude to a disaster. The people were walking in disobedience here. They were doing things their way. The Ark of the Covenant had rings on the corners and there were poles that were to be inserted into them. The appointed Levites were to carry the Ark with the poles on their shoulders. (The Ark was considered very special by the people because God prescribed that it was very Holy.) Now, for whatever reason, the people decided to place it on a cart, new as it was, to be carried that way instead. They”did it my way” as the old song goes. The disaster came when the oxen pulling the cart stumbled and Uzzah reached out and touched the Ark to steady it. The passage that followed called it an irreverent act/error, and Uzzah was struck down by God and he died.
We may have trouble with this story – David did. But there is a very important lesson. It is about what I call “upstream decisions.” We make decisions “upstream” that affect the “flow” of our downstream lives – the consequences. We may feel like we know better than God. Ouch! That hurts to even admit! We don’t think that is what we are saying by our disobeying or ignoring God on an issue, but actions do speak louder than words. It’s a matter of the heart – do we really believe God knows best? Are we willing to show our love for Him by being obedient? Or do we think we have a better way? It will affect our lives, our walk. God loves us more than we’ll ever know completely in this life. He has certainly shown us that in many ways. Jesus is the pinnacle of how much He loves.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
So believe! Believe in Him!! And trust His way(s).
